The History of Bearings
The ancient Egyptians were the first to demonstrate an understanding of the mechanical principles behind bearing operation, by using shaped tree trunks as rollers beneath the hauling sleds used to build the Pyramids. The oldest – circa 40AD – surviving example of a functioning bearing dates to early Roman times: a ball bearing used in a rotating table salvaged from the wreckage of an ancient ship found in Lake Nemi, Italy. Ball bearings were widely copied and the technology distributed in the following centuries, but the next great innovation in bearing design would have to wait for nearly a thousand years, emerging from the workshop of the master – Leonardo da Vinci. Around the year 1500 da Vinci illustrated what would come to be known as the roller bearing, and further innovations were more rapid. In the 1600s the famed scientist Galileo published specifications for the caged ball bearing, which greatly reduced erosion due to friction.
Galileo's caged bearing was improved on in the mid 18th century by John Harrison, who expanded on that design to create the first caged roller bearing, used in a novel timepiece. Harrison was able to design caged roller bearings that were able to conduct both oscillating and rotary motion, and his innovations marked an explosion of growth in bearing technology.
The evolution of modern bearings was advanced further in 1794, when Philip Vaughan patented the first mounted bearings set within a raceway. A patent for bearings in 1869 by Jules Suriray powered the winning bicycle in the inaugural Paris-to-Rouen road race just three months later. The stage was now set for mass production, and in 1883 Friedrich Fischer was the first inventor to design a process for milling ball bearings of consistent size, roundness, and performance – this was the dawn of the modern bearing industry.
